Gustav Stickley Fern Holder
Signed Gustav Stickley hammered copper and wrought iron Fern Holder, catalogue #308 measuring 7" diameter by 3 1/2" tall. Shown in the original Gustav Stickley catalogue: "1905 Hand-Wrought Metal Catalogue" which is reproduced in the book published by the Turn of the Century Editions titled: "Collected Works of Gustav Stickley" by Stephen Gray, ISBN # 0940326159 copyright 1981. The body is hammered copper and the three riveted legs are wrought iron. Signed with the impressed mark, "GUSTAV STICKLEY- THE CRAFTSMAN WORKSHOPS" in a circular band around the joiner's compass with the words: Als Ik Kan inside. This fern stand is an uncommon piece, beautifully designed and executed with the strength and simplicity of a quality Arts and Crafts object one would expect from Gustav Stickley's Metalshop. It is unfortunate that it had been left exposed to the elements for what must have been many years. The copper has heavy oxidation and there is significant rust and pitting of the iron legs. However, the spade shaped legs are still strong and riveted firmly to the body without any "play". I have shown an image with the stand fully supporting four of the large hardcover books "Gustav Stickley" which weigh almost 4 pounds each for a total of almost 16 pounds to demonstrate its strength. There are a few areas where the layer of oxidation has chipped off the rim of the body and the copper color shows. While we would all prefer this piece to be in original condition, it is, however, a good form and a testament to it's own tenacity. It is being sold in "as is" condition but still carries our guarantee to be vintage and as represented and may be returned if not satisfied upon receipt.
